What Is It?

The Training Visa allows Australian companies and government agencies to sponsor applicants to develop skills to improve your professional profile through occupational training or professional development activities. This visa allows you to work for your sponsor in your job whilst undertaking in a structured training program provided by your employer.

The Application Process

If the sponsoring company is not a Government Agency, the application process consists of three stages; sponsorship, nomination and visa application. Sponsorship must be by an approved Temporary Activities Sponsor and your employer must also nominate you.

Workplace-based training required for registration

This stream facilitates those applicants who require registration, membership or licensing to start an occupation in their home country or in Australia

Structured workplace-based training

This steam is designed to enhance skills in an eligible occupation if you are nominated by an approved temporary activities sponsor in Australia for an occupation specified in the list of eligible skilled occupations and require structured workplace-based training to enhance your skills for that occupation

Capacity Building Overseas

Occupational training for capacity building overseas stream allows for applicants who require training as part of their overseas study or who are supported by an Australian or overseas government organization or for professional or management level employees of an overseas organisation

Requirements

  • In the past 24 months, you must have worked or studied full time for at least 12 months, in the occupation that will be nominated. The nominated occupation must be on the 407 Training Visa Occupations List.
  • You also must show that you:
  • Have turned 18 (or can demonstrate exceptional circumstances)
  • Have functional English
  • Hold private health insurance
  • Have access to sufficient funds to support themselves in Australia
  • Genuinely intend to stay temporarily in Australia for the intended purpose

Where do I apply from?

You can either be in Australia or overseas when you apply for a Subclass 407 Training Visa.

How long will the Training Visa be valid for?

Live and work as a trainee in Australia for up to 2 years. The length of the visa will vary depending on the training plan submitted.

Can I include my family?

You can include the following types of family members in your application:

  • Spouses, de facto partners and same-sex partners
  • Dependent children
What you can do with a Training Visa?

You must work at least 30 hours per week and be paid at least the Award rate. You can only work for your sponsor.
