Looking to hire skilled workers from overseas? It could be one of the most strategic decisions for your business. The Australian employer sponsored visa system allows organisations to recruit international professionals with expertise that can be hard to find locally.
Whether you’re a large company in a metro area or a small business in a regional town, success depends on hiring the right people. Sponsorship gives your business a legal and structured way to do just that.
At Questra, we support employers across a wide range of industries—from registering as a sponsor to nominating employees and ensuring compliance. We also provide tailored advice based on your industry’s unique requirements.
Why Sponsor Overseas Workers?
Sponsoring overseas talent isn’t just about filling a role—it’s a smart, long-term investment in your team.
Sponsored employees are typically:
More committed to their positions
Loyal and reliable long-term
Equipped with international experience and insights
By sponsoring the right talent, your business can grow confidently while staying competitive. The first step is understanding which visa best suits your needs.
Visa Options for Employer Sponsorship (2025)
Australia offers a range of visa programs to suit both short-term and long-term staffing requirements. At Questra, we assess your business size, location, and role specifics to guide you toward the most suitable visa option.
Subclass 482 – Skill in Demand (SID) VisaÂ
Australia’s most commonly used employer-sponsored visa. It allows you to employ skilled workers for up to four years and can provide a pathway to permanent residency.
As of 2025, the visa includes three key streams tailored to different workforce needs:
1- Core Skills Stream – For most skilled roles where there’s a recognised shortage in the Australian labour market.
2- Specialist Skills Stream – For high-salary roles that require specialised expertise not easily found locally.
3 – Labour Agreement Stream – For employers operating under a DAMA or other approved labour agreement with the government.
Questra can help you determine which stream applies to your role and guide you through every step of the process.
Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS)
This permanent visa is ideal for employers looking to retain talent long-term.
It includes:
Direct Entry Stream – for new hires
Transition Stream – for workers already on a 482 or former 457 visa
Subclass 494 – Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa
The visa enables businesses operating in designated regional areas to sponsor skilled overseas workers for five years. The visa provides a direct route to permanent residency when you spend three years working and living in the region.
There are two available streams:
Direct Stream – Employers can use this stream to nominate workers for eligible occupations in regional areas without a current labour agreement.
Labour Agreement Stream – Employers who have a formal labour agreement (such as DAMA) in place with the Australian Government.
The visa enables regional workforce expansion while providing skilled migrants with substantial long-term possibilities in Australia.

Employer Sponsored Visas – Processing Times
The processing duration for visas depends on the visa stream and applicant profile together with government workload requirements. The official government source provides the most accurate and current information about visa processing times.
The Australian Government establishes Designated Area Migration Agreements (DAMA) through formal arrangements with specific regions and states and territories. The agreement enables these areas to solve their economic and labour market needs through customised sponsorship programs for overseas workers.
The standard visa programs have more flexibility through DAMA because it offers possible concessions on:
Skill level
English language proficiency
Salary thresholds
The agreement serves as an excellent answer for regional businesses which experience persistent skill deficits that cannot be resolved through local hiring. Questra will assist your business in determining eligibility and managing the agreement process when your operation is located in a DAMA-approved region.
Subclass 407 – Training Visa
Perfect for training existing employees or providing structured training to new hires. A great option for developing your workforce internally.
How Sponsorship Works
To hire overseas workers, your business must first be approved by the Australian Government as a Standard Business Sponsor.
How Sponsorship Works
You must nominate a specific position within your business and explain why it’s essential, proving no suitable local workers are available.
How Sponsorship Works
Once the nomination is approved, the chosen candidate applies for the relevant visa, such as the 482 or 186 visa.
How Sponsorship Works
After the visa is granted, you must follow all sponsorship obligations—keep accurate records, report changes, and ensure you pay the required salary.

Employer-Sponsored Visas - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How long does Standard Business Sponsorship last?
Approval is valid for five years. Renew it before expiry and you can keep using the same SBS number to nominate additional workers.
Do I have to advertise the role first?
In most cases, yes. Labour-Market Testing normally requires at least two advertisements run for a minimum of 28 days within the four months before the nomination is lodged.
What is the Skilling Australians Fund levy and when is it paid?
It’s a training levy paid at nomination:
Business turnover
482 visa
186 / 494 visa (one-off)
Under $10 million
$1,200 per nominee, per year
$3,000 per nominee
$10 million or more
$1,800 per nominee, per year
$5,000 per nominee
The levy funds apprenticeships and upskilling programs for Australian workers.
Can I sponsor more than one employee?
Absolutely. One SBS approval can support multiple nominations, but each worker still needs an individual nomination and SAF payment.
What happens if my sponsored employee resigns or is terminated?
Notify Home Affairs within 28 days. The employee then has 180 days to secure a new sponsor, move to another visa, or depart Australia.
When can a 482 visa-holder apply for permanent residency?
From 7 December 2024, most 482 holders become eligible for an ENS 186 PR nomination after two years of employment with their sponsoring employer (or combined time across approved sponsors).
How do 494 visa-holders transition to PR?
After three years living and working in a designated regional area—and meeting the taxable-income threshold—they can apply for the Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa, subclass 191.
Can dependants work or study?
Yes. Partners have full work rights, and children can attend Australian schools (state fees may apply in some jurisdictions).
Do DAMA concessions change the usual English or salary rules?
Often, yes. Within a Designated Area Migration Agreement, lower IELTS scores or reduced TSMIT levels may apply for certain regional occupations—only inside that DAMA’s terms.
