The General Skilled Migration (GSM) program of Australia exists to bring skilled individuals who want to permanently settle in Australia and address essential industry skill gaps. Through these visas people can obtain permanent residency in Australia while avoiding initial employer sponsorship for specific visa streams.

What are General Skilled Visas?

Under GSM several visa subclasses permit skilled professionals to immigrate to Australia through a process which assesses their skills together with their work experience and English language proficiency and qualifications. The majority of GSM visas use a points-based assessment system which tests how applicants contribute to the Australian economy.

The GSM program provides an ideal migration pathway for candidates who:

People with occupations in high demand in Australia can use this program.
Applicants need to fulfill particular age requirements as well as demonstrate English language competence and specific qualification standards.
People who want to obtain permanent residency and work authorisation in Australia should choose this pathway.

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa

This 189 visa allows skilled workers, independent of sponsorship by either an employer or state or territory agency, to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. It’s the most desirable skilled visa but also the visa with the highest points required.

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa

The 190 Visa allows skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. It’s an excellent option if you cannot tally enough points for a skilled independent visa.

Subclass 491 – Skilled Regional Visa

The 491 Visa – is in the first instance an open 5 year temporary visa that can allow you to transition to permanent residency. This visa requires you to be nominated by a state to live and work in a designated Regional area of Australia.

Subclass 191 Skilled Residence Visa

The 191 visa is for people who have lived, worked and studied in designated regional area Australia on a previous, eligible visa.

The Points Test: How It Works

Most GSM visas require applicants to pass a points-based evaluation. You need at least 65 points to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). Invitations are ranked, so higher points improve your chances of selection.

The Application Process: SkillSelect (Expression of Interest – EOI)

The GSM visa process involves multiple steps to ensure eligibility and competitiveness in the points-based system. Here’s how it works:

Get your skills evaluated by the Australian assessing authority for your selected occupation.
Sit an approved English test to meet language requirements.
Calculate your total points score.
Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect.
For Subclass 190 or 491 visas, apply directly to a state/territory for nomination if required.
Await an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
Lodge your visa application within 60 days, paying the visa charge and uploading all documents.
All family members undergo health and character checks.
