What is the 494 visa?
The Subclass 494 Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa lets a skilled worker live, work and study in a designated regional area with an approved employer for up to five years.
It’s temporary at first. After three years in a regional area; and three ATO Notices of Assessment, you can move to permanent residency via the Subclass 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa.
Why people Choose the 494
PR Pathway (No Income Threshold at 191 Stage)
The 494 is built to feed into the 191 Permanent Residence (Skilled Regional) visa. There’s no set minimum income for the 191 stage. What you need: time living and working in regional Australia, plus three ATO assessments to show you’ve filed tax returns.
Work and Study Rights for Your Family
You can work full time in the role you’re nominated for. If you include your partner and dependent children, they can work or study in regional Australia as well.
DAMA Can Open More Doors
If your area has a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA), there may be more occupations on offer and, in some cases, concessions for English, age, salary or experience. Handy if you’re close to the standard settings.
Regional Life, Real Jobs
Places like Adelaide, Townsville and Ballarat often mean lower living costs and shorter commutes. Employers in health, engineering, ICT, trades and hospitality regularly need skilled staff.
494 Visa Pros: Your Pathway to Permanent Residency
Secure PR Pathway
Gain a clear, structured route to Australian permanent residency via the Subclass 191 visa after completing the qualifying three-year period and providing three ATO Notices of Assessment. The best part — there’s currently no minimum income threshold for the 191 stage.
Family Inclusion & Opportunity
Your partner and dependent children enjoy full work and study rights in regional Australia, allowing your family to build a stable and fulfilling life together.
Genuine, High-Value Employment
This is a full-time, employer-sponsored role within your skilled field, ensuring your salary meets both the Annual Market Salary Rate (AMSR) and the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT).
DAMA Flexibility
If your region operates under a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA), you may access a broader occupation list and possible concessions on age, English, or experience — offering greater eligibility opportunities.
Requirements for Success: The Fine Print We Manage for You
Mandatory Regional Commitment
You must live, work and study exclusively within designated regional postcodes throughout your provisional visa period to meet the 191 permanent residency criteria.
Tied Sponsorship Requirement
The visa is linked to a specific employer and occupation. Any change requires a new nomination and approval before you can begin new work. Questra Immigration provides guidance to ensure compliance and smooth transitions.
Strict Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must hold a positive skills assessment, demonstrate Competent English, and meet age and salary thresholds at the time of application.
Processing Time Variables
Processing times depend on nomination approval, document readiness, skills assessment queues, medical checks, and Department workload.
