If you’re an engineer with foreign qualifications aiming for a skilled Australian visa, you’ll need to have your expertise assessed. Engineers Australia is the official authority for this skills assessment, evaluating your engineering qualifications for visa purposes.

Engineers Australia conducts mandatory assessments for people who want to obtain Skilled Independent (189) and Skilled Nominated (190) visas as well as Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) 491 and Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS 186).

Who Needs a Skills Assessment?

The engineering skills assessment is mandatory for all applicants who fall into the following categories:

  • General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa applicants
  • Visa applicants who seek employer sponsorship under the 186 visa category
  • Permanent residency or skilled visa applications for engineers require this assessment in Australia

Occupational Categories Assessed by Engineers Australia

Your assessment process will begin based on your academic qualifications and work experience. Engineers Australia accepts three main occupational categories for assessment purposes:

  • The Professional Engineer position requires applicants to hold either a four-year Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent
  • The Engineering Technologist role needs candidates to present either a three-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • To become an Engineering Associate you need either a two-year Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree
  • The Engineering Manager position demands senior-level management experience of at least five years combined with appropriate tertiary qualification

Assessment Pathways for Engineers

The Australian professional association Engineers Australia provides multiple pathways for evaluation.
The Washington Accord along with Sydney Accord and Dublin Accord countries permit quick assessment for engineering degree holders.

Assessment Pathways for Engineers

This assessment route serves applicants who demonstrate:

  • Qualifications not accredited under international accords
  • Work experience gained outside Australia
  • Non-standard engineering qualifications

A CDR includes:

  • Three career episodes
  • A summary statement
  • A continuing professional development (CPD) list
  • Accredited Qualifications
  • Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) Pathway

English Language Proficiency Requirements

You need to show English proficiency through one of these accepted tests:

  • IELTS (minimum 6.0 in each band)
  • TOEFL iBT
  • PTE Academic

Engineering Manager applicants need to attach reference letters and job descriptions along with an organisational chart to demonstrate their senior-level management experience.
