ANMAC Skills Assessment

Want to Work as a Nurse or Midwife in Australia? 

It’s an exciting goal, and we know navigating the process can feel complex. To work in Australia as a registered nurse or midwife you must do the ANMAC skills assessment and register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA). An assessment for this process confirms that your qualifications and experience meet the Australian standards for nursing and midwifery.

What is Involved in the ANMAC Skills Assessment?

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) conducts official skills assessments for nurses and midwives wanting to work in Australia. This assessment is essential for skilled migration visas (such as the 491, 189, or 190) or employer-sponsored visas.

The process starts with a self-check to determine your assessment stream, evaluating how your nursing qualifications and experience match Australian standards.

Qualification Requirements for Nurses in Australia

To qualify for registration and skilled migration as a nurse, your qualifications must:

Be externally accredited or recognised by a regulatory authority

Be equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree (for registered nurses) or a diploma (for enrolled nurses)

Align with the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF)

Breakdown of IQNM Assessment Streams

Stream A – Equivalent to AQF Level 7

Your qualification meets criteria 1 and 2 and aligns with AQF Level 7. You’ll need to complete the online orientation before applying for NMBA registration.

Stream B – AQF 6 or Minor Gaps

Your qualification is AQF 6 and meets most criteria, or AQF 7 with minor gaps. You’ll be required to complete:

  • Online orientation
  • Portfolio submission
  • Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA): includes a multiple-choice exam and a clinical exam

Stream C – AQF 5 or Lower

If your qualification is AQF 5 or lower, you will need to complete an NMBA-approved nursing course in Australia before being eligible for registration.

ANMAC Assessment Options Explained

Full Skills Assessment

Required for IQNMs who hold a Bachelor of Nursing from Canada, Hong Kong, Ireland, the UK, or the US, and are registered in that country but not in Australia.

Modified Skills Assessment

Applies to nurses who are already registered with the NMBA or Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ).

Modified PLUS Skills Assessment

If you’ve received a “Notice of In Principle Approval of Registration” from AHPRA but are not yet fully registered, this pathway is for you.
