What is Subclass 494?
The Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (SESR) Visa under subclass 494 operates as a provisional visa to address skill shortages in regional Australian territories. The Australian government introduced this visa on 16 November 2019 to replace the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (RSMS) visa (Subclass 187). Skilled workers can achieve permanent residency through this 5-year visa by working in regional Australia because it allocates 9,000 places yearly to people in over 700 eligible occupations.
Visa Streams
Employer Sponsored Stream
Employers use this stream to nominate positions which require skills they cannot find in Australian workers.
Labour Agreement Stream
The Australian Government authorises specific occupations through formal Labour Agreements which employers use to sponsor skilled workers beyond standard visa program possibilities.
The Application Process: Step-by-Step
The employer needs to start by obtaining Standard Business Sponsorship approval. The approval lasts for five years and proves that the business can employ foreign workers.
The Application Process: Step-by-Step
Employers need to receive RCB advice prior to starting position nomination procedures. The Regional Certifying Body examines the regional area’s need for the nominated position while ensuring the employment terms meet Australian labour market requirements. The RCB assessment verifies that the visa program effectively addresses genuine skill shortages in regional areas.
The Application Process: Step-by-Step
After securing SBS approval and a positive RCB recommendation, the employer can lodge a nomination showing the position is:
Genuine – A real business need
Full-time – Must be full-time
Long-term – Expected to last 5+ years
Market Salary – Salary must meet or exceed AMSR and TSMIT.
TSMIT – AUD $73,150 (rising to $76,515 on 1 July 2025)
The Application Process: Step-by-Step
After the Department of Home Affairs approves the nomination the employee needs to submit their visa application within six months. The applicant must show proof of meeting all requirements for visa eligibility including skills assessment and English proficiency along with health and character standards.
