What Is the Onshore Partner Visa?
The 820/801 Partner Visa is a two-stage visa for partners of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens who apply from within Australia.
- Subclass 820 – Temporary Partner Visa: Grants you the right to live, work, and study in Australia while your permanent visa is assessed.
- Subclass 801 – Permanent Partner Visa: Usually assessed about 2 years later. Once granted, you become a permanent resident.
The key advantage of applying onshore is receiving a Bridging Visa A, allowing you to stay in Australia lawfully after your current visa expires.

Yes. You’ll have full work rights while waiting on your 820 visa.
Not on a BVA. You’ll need to apply for a Bridging Visa B if you plan to leave and return.
You must notify the Department. In some cases (e.g. family violence, shared children), the visa may still be granted. Legal advice is recommended.
