If you’re already in Australia and want to build a permanent future with your partner, the Onshore Partner Visa is your direct path. This visa lets you remain in the country while your application is processed—and sets you on the journey to permanent residency.
At Questra, we understand how meaningful this step is. We’re here to guide you with clarity, structure, and support—so you and your partner can focus on life, not paperwork.
What Is the Onshore Partner Visa?
The 820/801 Partner Visa is a two-stage visa for partners of Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens who apply from within Australia.
- Subclass 820 – Temporary Partner Visa: Grants you the right to live, work, and study in Australia while your permanent visa is assessed.
- Subclass 801 – Permanent Partner Visa: Usually assessed about 2 years later. Once granted, you become a permanent resident.
The key advantage of applying onshore is receiving a Bridging Visa A, allowing you to stay in Australia lawfully after your current visa expires.

Subclass 820/801 - FAQ
Can I work on a Bridging Visa A?
Yes. You’ll have full work rights while waiting on your 820 visa.
Can I travel while waiting?
Not on a BVA. You’ll need to apply for a Bridging Visa B if you plan to leave and return.
What if we break up before the 801 stage?
You must notify the Department. In some cases (e.g. family violence, shared children), the visa may still be granted. Legal advice is recommended.
