Points Tested General Skilled Migration (GSM)

The Permanent Solution

The purpose of the Skilled Migration Program is to attract highly skilled and employable people for migration to Australia. It is the most common form of migration to Australia, and Questra is here to help manage your skilled migration application through SkillSelect.

The Application Process

Check Your Eligibility

Prior to submitting an Expression of Interest (EOI), applicants must meet the pass mark in the Skilled Migration Points Test.

Wait for Invitation

Once you have submitted an EOI, you can then be invited by the Australian government, Australian employers, or state governments to apply for the skilled visa.

Submit an EOI

In order to apply for Skilled Independent or Skilled Nominated visa, you are required to submit an EOI through SkillSelect.

Apply for Visa

After receiving an invitation to apply for the visa from the DOHA, you will have 60 days to lodge a visa application. Without an invitation you are not eligible to apply.

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa

This 189 visa allows skilled workers, independent of sponsorship by either an employer or state or territory agency, to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. It’s the most desirable skilled visa but also the visa with the highest points required.

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa

The 190 Visa allows skilled workers who are nominated by an Australian state or territory government to live and work in Australia as a permanent resident. It’s an excellent option if you cannot tally enough points for a skilled independent visa.

Subclass 491 – Skilled Regional Visa

The 491 Visa – is in the first instance an open 5 year temporary visa that can allow you to transition to permanent residency. This visa requires you to be nominated by a state to live and work in a designated Regional area of Australia.

Subclass 191 Skilled Residence Visa

The 191 visa is for people who have lived, worked and studied in designated regional area Australia on a previous, eligible visa.

Common Questions

What is the General Skilled Migration Points System?
The points system is designed to set clear transparent standards for migrants who wish to live and work in Australia. The current points threshold to apply for a visa is 65 points. The eight categories that attract points Ie:

  • age
  • English competency
  • skilled employment in the last 10 years outside Australia
  • skilled employment in the last 10 years in Australia
  • qualifications
  • Australian study requirement
  • specialist education qualification, and
  • other criteria, such as partner skill qualifications.
  • The number of points you receive in each subcategory depends on your situation. Accordingly, the Australian Government has created a points table that helps you calculate how many points you may have.
What is a Skills Assessment?
You must Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via SkillSelect with details of your nominated occupation, skills, and qualifications. SkillSelect estimates your points score and ranks you against other intending migrants. If you are ranked high enough and there are places available for your nominated occupation, you will be invited to apply for the visa.

If you are invited, you have 60 calendar days to apply for the visa.

These are the basic details that you need to Iy lodge your EOI:

  • Basic personal details
  • Work Ie details
  • Qualification documents
  • English Language certification (ie. IELTS)
  • Positive skills assessment letter, related to your nominated occupation
  • Once you’ve submitted your EOI, you’ll be added to the pool of people waiting to be invited to apply for a visa. When you receive your invitation, you will then have 60 days to file for a visa. We make sure that your visa is lodged quickly and accurately.
What is an invitation to apply?
The visa you are invited to apply for – and the time taken for you to be invited – will depend on various things, including:

The list on which your job appears (Short Term Skilled Occupation LIST – STSOL or Medium and Long Term Strategic Skills List – MLTSTL)

  • Your overall point score
  • The number of people in your occupation who have already lodged an EOI
  • State requirements and quotas for your occupation
